Are You Living in a Burglary Hotspot?

Recent figures from the British Crime Survey and The Yorkshire Bank have revealed where you are most likely to be burgled in the United Kingdom and where you are not.

Statistically people living in the City of London are the most likely to be the victim of  burglary, with Burnley and Manchester coming a close second and third place respectfully.

However these statistics are not meant to frighten people as statistically you are less likely to be burgled than 8 years ago; as since 2002/03 there has been a dramatic national decrease of around 35% of the number of crimes of this kind.

The winner of the most significant drop in burglaries goes to Hartlepool – with a whopping 65% decrease since 2002.

The only area in the UK where the number of crime has increased in the last 7 years is Burnley in the North West, moving to second place in the top three most burglary prone places.

On the other side of the spectrum you are least likely to be burgled in Ceredigion in Wales, which came top of the least amount of burglaries per 1,000 population 2002/03 compared with 2008/09. A very close second was the isle of Scilly recording only 6 burglaries in total for 2008/09!

A common way for burglars to enter your premises is naturally through your windows so follow Window Security Solutions Top Three Tips in helping prevent burglary:

1.    Never leave your window open (or a-jar) – the smallest gap between the window and its frame gives enough space for a burglar to place his screw-driver or similar instrument into and prise open the window.
2.    Don’t leave valuables in sight – as an opportunist burglars would see this as a challenge and would try any means to get hold of your hard earned possessions, remember: ‘out of sight, out of (burglar’s) mind.’
3.    Install window security grilles – these do not affect the aesthetics of your home and make your glass appear as if it is tinted – here at Window Security Solutions we do a range of shields fit to suit any home style.
